
They’re capable of moving resources effectively, but bad train AI means that in practice they don’t, only moving 2-3 items at a time instead of the 30+ they can hold. What they don’t do is move resources around, which would have made them great. There’s a period in a colony’s life when colonists moving between domes is highly useful, but you haven’t researched flying shuttles yet, and trains do that. Martian Express is deeply flawed, but not as completely useless as the reviews make out. Space Race gives you competing colonies that will only very rarely agree to any kind of useful trade, for example. I got most of the early DLC as part of a bundle, and I think you can safely skip things like Space Race and Project Laika.

Green Mars and the Colony Design Set, I’d say. This one gives you goals to go up the tech tree and actually thrive. I feel like a lot of post-apocalyptic games. Nearly nothing to a fully established city. The part I find really interesting is how far you can go from. But radiation comes and goes and you have to keep your colonists safe from it, you have to survive droughts and storms etc. Like you, start out with just an RV with like 10 survivors and over time you can build up to a city of thousands, there is a combat aspect but it's not great but you can just turn it off too. There's also a DLC that adds a hot air balloon where you can explore other parts of the world and opens up other campaigns. You still have the overworld gameplay where you send out parties of colonists to investigate ruins and locations in the world. It's a lot larger scale than something like surviving the aftermath. It's another post-apocalyptic colony sim.
